Boston/Cape Cod

Just wrapped up a week in the Boston/Cape Cod area.  We did so much that I am having a difficult time remembering all that we did!  :)

We had traveled to Boston before but just stayed inside the city so we wanted to see what else the area had to offer.  We stayed on Cape Cod, which is a very green and beautiful area that kind of reminds me of the area around Seattle.  Our first day we drove route 6 from Bourne all the way up to Provincetown. Along the way we stopped in Plymouth, to see the famous rock.  It was a bit anti-climactic because the rock is so small and the Mayflower wasn't even there!  It's being restored in Mystic, CT. :(  We did see the National Monument to the Forefathers which is a statue erected in homage to our forefathers on the Mayflower. It has the names of all the passengers on the Mayflower. It also has the pillars and beliefs of what this nation was founded on.  It is very beautiful.
We then got back on the road but before driving into Provincetown, we stopped at the National Seashore right outside of it. It is a beautiful area that is now protected and funded by the National Park System and it has a lot of bike trails. Seems to be a very popular biking haven.  We didn't have bikes with us but if we ever get back to that area we will definitely take advantage of the trails.

The next day we took the ferry to Martha's Vineyard.  I have always wanted to visit and a bonus for me was that I have a friend who was there and we got to meet up!  :)  We had lunch together and then Gary and I spent a few hours exploring 2 towns on the island.  We went to Oak Bluffs and then to Edgartown.  Between the 2 towns is "Jaws Bridge" which is the bridge that was in the movie Jaws.  Also on the Vineyard are cute little shops, yummy restaurants and a lot of boats!  It is a beautiful place and I would love to visit again and spend a few days exploring the entire island.

You can't be in the Boston area without visiting the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library.  It was very well done.  Such a sad moment in history for our country but he sure did leave a legacy.  After touring the library, we needed a drink so we headed to the Samuel Adams Brewery for a tour.  The tour lasts about an hour but the last half hour you get as much free beer as you want!  ;)  The generous people at Sam Adams let you taste 3 or so flavors of their beer.  One of which will be a seasonal beer, another will be a new brew and one will be their first one the brewery was founded on.  It was a fun tour and we learned that some of the beers brewed are only available in Boston. What a great concept!  ;)

After a fun day in Boston, we headed south to Newport, RI.  The town is known for its historic mansions that the "upper crust" used as their summer "cottages" back in the day.  These mansions are so unbelievable and one right after the other.  It is really a wonder to see.  Some of them are now museums that offer daily tours.  Just amazing and breathtaking.

On our last day, Gary declared it to be "The Day of Danelle" ;)  We were driving to the Cape Cod area on my birthday when we hit a bump which caused an alarm to go off.  Long story short, we drove with this alarm going off for 4 hours, with headphones on to try to block out the alarm.  As a result, Gary felt like my birthday deserved a do over.  We drove back into Boston for the day and we just wandered around.  We stumbled upon a festival in the North End (which is the Italian section of Boston) which was celebrating the feast day of St. Agrippina di Mineo. So much fun!  We also had dinner in the North End (SO YUMMY!)  before going to the Yankees/Red Sox game.  It was a late game that didn't start until 8.  We finally left after the 7th inning stretch when I thought my Yanks had the game in hand at 4-1.  Sadly, at 1am the Sox came back in extra innings and beat my Yanks.  :(  I'm glad we didn't stick around to see that dismal ending but it was still a fun time and a great make up day for my birthday!
