The last 2 nights I have had songs running through my head with the name, "Chicago" in them. I guess it was my brain telling me I needed to update the blog. ;)
As you can guess, we rolled through Chicago recently. We had never been so we were excited to check it out. We have some friends who live in Grand Rapids, MI who drove down to join us for a Chicago White Sox game our first day there. The game was successful (from my perspective) since The Tribe shut out the ChiSox 9-0. After the game we found an amazing neighborhood Italian restaurant where we had a quick dinner before we had to say good bye to our friends. Fun day!
Being huge Frank Lloyd Wright fans (geeks), we were excited to see many of his incredible projects in the city. We started with a tour of his house and studio. His drafting studio is just mind boggling. I don't know how he thought to do the things he did but he was indeed a genius. After the formal tour, Gary and I walked around the nearby neighborhood to see some of his houses he designed and also the Unitarian Church he was commissioned to design. He went over budget by almost double but it is still standing today and still a building of wonder so I guess it was worth it. After that we left Oak Park and drove into downtown. We HAD to go to Willis Tower and straight up to the top. We kept commenting how fortunate we were as we kept walking through the various holding areas and right up to the elevator. The elevator operators told us that the wait time can usually be up to 2 hours! Not sure if I would wait 2 hours to go up to the top but it was a fun thing to do while there. After that we walked all over downtown. We walked all the way to the end of the Navy Pier and then back. Then we walked to Millennium Park to see Cloud Gate, or more famously known as The Bean. It's so much fun! :) We had a great time taking all sorts of pictures since it was such a clear day. After all of that it was 5 o'clock and we didn't want to leave the city with everyone else so we found a quiet bar to wait out the traffic. This is where I checked my pedometer that said we walked 7 miles. I always forget how much you walk when you are sightseeing in a big city.
Our last day poured rain (surprise!) so we drove into the city again for a tour of Wrigley Field. How can you not go to Wrigley if you're in Chicago? At first we were bummed that the Cubs weren't in town while we were there but in the end, it worked out so we could take a tour. We got to see the visiting team's clubhouse, various premium seating places, the famous Bleachers and the dugout and then we stepped out onto the field. If you are a baseball fan, I highly recommend this tour. Before we drove into the city, I found out that our favorite seafood place has a location in Chicago. We were super excited because this place only has 4 locations in the country. It was just as yummy as I remembered it and it was a great way to wrap up our time in ChiTown. Bonus points for after dinner when we walked Rush St. and The Magnificent Mile because we got to see the Iron Throne from Game of Thrones. Yay!! :)
